Bracelet Sizing Guide for Gifts: Get the Fit Right, Secretly

Nobody knows their bracelet size — which makes it the easiest gift to size wrong and, with one borrowed bracelet and a ruler, the easiest to size perfectly. Here is the method, including the secret versions.

A bracelet is the most gifted piece of jewellery and the easiest to size wrong — because unlike a ring, nobody knows their bracelet size, and unlike a necklace, two centimetres is the difference between elegant and unwearable. The good news: bracelets are forgiving in one direction. A slightly generous bracelet drapes and moves; a slightly tight one is simply never worn. This guide gives you the measurement methods — including the secret ones, for gifts — and the fit rules for the pieces in our store, from the double-heart Mother-Daughter and Soul Sister bracelets to the bracelet in the Dream Catcher set. For the choosing that comes before sizing, see how to choose a meaningful gift.

How bracelet sizing works

Bracelet size is wrist circumference plus wearing ease. Measure the wrist snugly where the bracelet will sit, then add ease by fit preference: about 1 cm for a close fit, 1.5 cm for the classic comfortable fit most gift bracelets are designed around, and 2 cm or more for a loose, draped fit. Charm and beaded bracelets need the generous end of that range, because the beads themselves take up room on the inside of the circle — a beaded bracelet at exact wrist size will feel tight even though the tape said it should not.

Three ways to measure — including secretly

When in doubt, size up — and choose adjustable

Gift logic is asymmetric: a bracelet a touch large is worn happily, and many designs — including chain-and-extender styles — let the wearer choose between two or three clasp positions, which quietly solves the sizing problem entirely. When a piece offers an extender, choose it for gifts. When it does not and you are between sizes, take the larger. The same generosity principle runs through our gifts under $35 guide: the best gift is the one that fits her life without an exchange trip attached.

Fit by bracelet type

One last reassurance: sizing is a solvable detail, not a verdict on the gift. Choose the meaning first — the Mother & Daughter and Soul Sister pieces carry theirs in the double-heart design — then let the borrowed-bracelet trick quietly guarantee the fit.

What if you still get it wrong?

Then the gift is exchanged, not ruined — check the retailer's exchange terms before you buy, keep the packaging complete, and remember that a size exchange on a chosen-with-care bracelet carries none of the sting of a thoughtless gift. She will remember that you chose the double heart and measured her old bracelet in secret long after she forgets which clasp position she wears it on.
